How to Fill Your Mediflow Water Pillow: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your Mediflow Water Pillow has arrived. You've opened the box, found the pillow, the cap and the little funnel, and now you're standing at the kitchen sink wondering: how much water, exactly? Good news: setup takes about ten minutes, and there's no way to get it permanently "wrong." You can always add or remove water.

Quick answer: Start with about 2 litres of room-temperature tap water, using the funnel. Press out the extra air, close the cap tightly, then lie on the pillow in your usual position. Add or remove about half a litre at a time until your neck feels level and supported. Side sleepers usually end up firmest, around 4–5 L.

What you need

  • Your Mediflow Water Pillow, cap and funnel (all in the box)
  • A measuring jug or a 1-litre bottle (so you know how much you've added)
  • Room-temperature tap water
  • A towel, just in case

Tip: Keep the instruction sheet handy. You can also watch the filling video on the product page.

Step 1: Start low

It's easier to add water than to pour it out, so begin with less than you think. Start with about 2 L (2 qt). That's the "soft" setting and a comfortable baseline for anyone.

Step 2: Fill through the funnel

Lay the pillow flat on a counter or the floor with the opening facing up. Insert the funnel and pour slowly. Pouring fast can trap air bubbles. Use your measuring jug so you keep count.

Step 3: Press out the air

Before you close it, gently press down on the pillow until the water level reaches the opening. This pushes out trapped air, which is what causes a gurgly, bubbly feel. Then screw the cap on firmly.

Step 4: Test it in your real sleep position

Put on a pillowcase (standard or queen fits), place it on your bed, and lie down the way you actually fall asleep. Give it a full minute. Then check:

  • Back sleepers: Is your face roughly parallel to the ceiling? If your chin tips toward your chest, there's too much water. If your head tips back, add some.
  • Side sleepers: Is your nose in line with the centre of your chest? If your head drops toward the mattress, add water. If your ear feels pushed toward your shoulder, remove some.
  • Stomach sleepers: Your head should feel as low and flat as possible.

It also helps to tuck the bottom edge of the pillow snugly into the curve of your neck, rather than just resting your head on top.

Step 5: Adjust in small steps

Add or remove about 0.5 L at a time, then test again. Most people find their setting within two or three adjustments.

Feel Approximate water Often suits
Soft about 2 L Stomach sleepers, smaller frames
Medium about 3 L Back sleepers
Firm about 4–5 L Side sleepers, broader shoulders

Don't fill beyond the maximum shown on your instruction sheet.

Step 6: Sleep on it for 3 nights

The first night can feel different, especially if you've slept on a flat or squishy pillow for years. Your neck is getting used to actually being supported. Give it three nights before making a big change, then fine-tune. Write down your water amount so you can recreate it if you ever empty the pillow.

Common setup mistakes

  1. Filling too much on day one. A very firm pillow can feel like a brick. Start low and work up.
  2. Leaving air in. Bubbles make noise and an uneven feel. Press the air out before capping.
  3. Testing while sitting up. You need to lie down in your actual sleep position to judge the height.
  4. Changing too much at once. Big swings make it hard to find your sweet spot. Half a litre is plenty.
  5. Forgetting your shoulders. If you have broad shoulders and sleep on your side, you'll likely need the higher end of the range.

FAQ

How much water should I put in my water pillow? Start at about 2 L, then adjust. Back sleepers often settle around 3 L, and side sleepers around 4–5 L.

Should I use warm or cold water? Room-temperature tap water is ideal. There's no need to heat it.

How often do I need to refill it? You don't need to refill it routinely. Once you find your setting, it stays. Check your instruction sheet for care and water-change guidance.
